My idea for this project came to me one day while I was talking to a parent whose child has a disability. We discussed her concern that often teachers don't understand the implications of how certain disabilities affect the students and how that impacts their learning. I teach students with Learning Disabilities, Mild Mental Disabilities, Other Health Impairments-ADHD, Emotional Disabilities, and Autism. I have other students for whom I manage their 504 plans who have Depressive Disorder, Anxiety, Tourette's Syndrome, and ADHD. My goal for this project was to explain what defines each disability and provide some demonstration of how the disability affects the students' learning. I wanted to create an interactive project using a forum such as Wikispaces. However, I found out that my district doesn't allow Wiki or other "blog" forum. As a result I have created an instructional presentation to help teachers better understand students with disabilities.
